Make the Most Out of Your Kitchen Renovation Budget
Last week there was a fantastic article posted on Houzz titled Rein In and Splash Out: How to Budget for a Kitchen Renovation.
We liked the article so much that we decided to post some of what we felt were the most important points.
Spend… time on planning and budgeting
- make a list of things you can’t do without
- have an emergency fund – just in case
- do your research and always bargain for discounts
Save… on quantity of units
This was a practical tip suggesting you go through everything in your current kitchen and dispose or sell everything you don’t need – the idea is that you’ll then need less cabinets.
Spend… on piped underfloor heating
- frees up wall space from heaters and air conditioning
- underground heating is wonderful in winter when the tiles would usually be cold
- less expensive than electric heating pads
We have two resources that can help you get a good feel for how much to budget for your kitchen renovation:

Save… on appliances
Not necessarily the quality of each appliance but more likely the amount of them – do you really need everything!
These are the must haves: stovetop and oven, fridge-freezer and dishwasher.
Spend… on benchtops
Simple enough this is because benchtops give an instant wow factor!
Check out our kitchen reno process here.
Save… on splashbacks
You can get a clean, sharp look with sheet metal or low cost tiles!
Spend… on taps and hardware
- These need to be good quality to withstand years of use
- Ensuring all the hardware is the same material and colour creates a sharp luxurious look
Save… on sinks
- Sinks just don’t have a wow factor so why get the most expensive one
- If you are wanting a ceramic sink look for a bargain on ebay
Spend… on lighting
Since your kitchen is so well used and the centerpiece of most homes it makes sense to spend more on high quality lighting.
Save… on flooring
There are simply better areas to spend your money. High quality slate tiles or poured concrete are great options.
Well that’s it. We hope you enjoyed this summary of another fantastic article on Houzz. Let us know in the comments what you would spend your money on and how you would save your money.

From Budget Kitchens To Jaw Dropping Luxury Kitchens
There are a lot of factors that go into the cost of a kitchen renovation. Last week we noticed an article on Houzz, titled Expert Eye: How Much Does a Kitchen Makeover (Really) Cost? and written by Adam Scougall the Director, Designer and Creative Artist at Adam Scougall Interior Design & Decoration, Sydney.
We thought we’d highlight some of the tips mentioned in this article. And we’ll take the opportunity to let our readers know about some of the resources we’ve pulled together to help them figure out how much their kitchen renovation should cost.
How Much Will A Budget Kitchen Renovation Cost?
In the Houzz article, Adam mentions that the range for a budget kitchen makeover is between $10,000 and $25,000. We agree with this range. We have two resources that can help you get a good feel for how much a budget kitchen renovation could cost.

Resource 2: Our Kitchen Renovation Pricing Quiz
Budget Kitchen Renovation Tips
Adam shares some great tips in his article. We’ve summarised them below:
- Make use of Ikea’s cabinets as they come in many different finishes and sizes
- A gold tile paint on subway style splash backs can give an illusion of luxury
How Much Will A Mid-Range Kitchen Renovation Cost?
Adam mentions that a mid-range kitchen will cost between $20,000 and $50,000. We feel that $50,000 is getting to the high end in terms of the prices for our kitchen renovations. Perhaps this is because of the higher property values in Sydney.
In our kitchen renovation quiz you have a choice between a small, medium and large kitchen. You’re then prompted for the type of cabinets, hardware, bench tops etc… Even if you choose the most expensive options for a large kitchen the cost is $42,770.
Mid Range Budget Kitchen Renovation Tips
Once again Adam has some excellent pointers for saving money on mid range kitchens:
- Use Caesarstone’s Calacatta Nuvo rather than a marble finish
- Use Veneer instead of timber
- Use marble lookalike tiles
How Much Will A High End Luxury Kitchen Cost?
Adam mentions that high end luxury kitchens can cost between $50,000 and $100,000. Most of our customers fit into the budget and mid-range categories… so if you want to find out more about luxury kitchens we suggest you check out the article on Houzz.
